Man Utd best performance in the top English and European Competitions
Not only are Manchester United the most famous club in the English game, they are also the most successful, having won multiple trophies on both the domestic and European stage:
- Premier League: Manchester United have won the English league title on a record 20 occasions, including 13 victories in the Premier League era.
- FA Cup: With 12 wins in England’s top knockout cup competition, the Red Devils are the second most successful side in the history of the competition – lying only one behind big rivals Arsenal as of 2019
- Champions League: The Old Trafford outfit have lifted Europe’s biggest trophy on three occasions, coming out on top in 1967-68, 1998-99 and 2007-08.
- Europa League: United completed the set of European club titles when winning the Europa League for the first – and so far only – time in 2016-17.
Manchester United’s most famous players
Manchester United have had more than their fair share of star performers over the years, and narrowing them down certainly isn’t easy. Honourable mentions go to the likes of Duncan Edwards, Peter Schmeichel, Cristiano Ronaldo and Roy Keane, but we believe the following five will rank pretty highly with the majority of United fans :
- Eric Cantona: The man remembered fondly simply as “King Eric” quickly became an inspirational – and controversial – figure upon arriving at Manchester United from rivals Leeds United in 1992, helping the club to the Premier League title in four of his five seasons at the club.
- Ryan Giggs: A tricky and speedy winger with an eye for goal, Welsh international Giggs was a one club man, remaining at United throughout his career between 1990 and 2014. With 963 appearance to his name, no man has played for the Red Devils on more occasions.
- Bobby Charlton: A Ballon d’Or and World Cup winner with England in 1966, Bobby Charlton is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders to have ever played the game. A survivor of the Munich air disaster, Charlton was renowned for his shooting and passing ability, and lifted the league title on three occasions.
- Wayne Rooney: One of the greatest forwards in the history of the side, Rooney’s lethal finishing saw him become the all-time top scorer for both Manchester United and the English National side. Rooney’s goals helped the United to five Premier League titles during his time at the club.
- George Best: Northern Ireland’s greatest ever footballer was one of the most naturally gifted footballers to ever pull on the red shirt of United. A brilliant dribbler, Best was able to both create and score a goal and won the Ballon d’Or in 1968.
Man.Utd most famous coaches
United have had fewer managers than many other English football sides, with a total of only 22 men having taken charge. Of those 22, there are three who stand out ahead of the rest – including two all-time greats.
- Ernest Mangnall: One of the real founding fathers of the Manchester United success story, Mangnall took charge of the Red Devils between 1903 and 1912 – leading the club to their first ever league title in 1907-08. Mangnall may not be as famous as the next two names on our list, but was a hugely influential figure in the club’s early years.
- Sir Matt Busby: Busby was the man who engineered United’s first era of sustained success during the 1950’s and 1960’s, leading the side to 13 titles in all - including their first ever European Cup success in 1968. The fact that the Munich air tragedy came in the midst of the Busby era is further testament to his managerial talents.
- Sir Alex Ferguson: The man who has won more trophies than any other manager in the history of the game is quite rightly rated as the greatest ever Manchester United boss. Taking over at the club in 1986, Ferguson transformed United from a mid-table side into the dominant force in the English game – winning an incredible 38 trophies before retiring in 2013.
Who are Manchester United’s major rivals
As one of the oldest and most successful sides in British football, United have developed a number of fierce rivalries with competing sides over the years. But who are the biggest of all?
- Liverpool: Both being located in the North West of the country, games between Manchester United and Liverpool were always likely to have something of a derby feel to them. Throw in the fact that they are the two most successful sides in the history of the British game, and the stage is set for many a heated encounter.
- Leeds United: This rivalry has its roots way back in the 1400’s and the famous “War of the Roses” between Lancashire and Yorkshire. With Manchester United representing the Red Rose of Lancashire and Leeds United the White Rose of Yorkshire, it is a rivalry which remains strong to this day.
- Man City: Of course, Manchester is far from being a one club city, and there is little love lost when United lock horns with the Citizen’s from the Etihad. In the shadows of the far more successful United for so long, the recent success of City has evened things up considerably.
- Arsenal: Perhaps the fiercest rivalry to have only developed in more recent times is the competition which exist between United and this North London side. Having regularly battled it out for the title in the Premier League era, matches between these two always seem to have a little extra riding on them.
- Chelsea: Another London side who don’t seem to have too much love for their North West rivals are the Blues of Chelsea. Being far apart geographically, and having no real historical factors in play, this is again a rivalry which has resulted from the regular competition between the sides as they have battled for England’s major trophies.
