Juventus best performance in the top English and European Competitions
Juventus are comfortably the most decorated side in the Italian domestic game, and have also tasted considerable success in Europe. All of which has resulted in a trophy cabinet which would be the envy of most clubs around the world:
- Serie A: Juve have an incredible 36 Italian league championships to their name – double the amount of any other side.
- Coppa Italia: The Old Lady haven’t been quite so dominant in Italy’s premier knockout cup competition, but their 13 successes still puts them four clear of any other side.
- Champions League: Juventus have been crowned kings of Europe on two occasions, first winning in 1984-85, and then again in 1995-96.
- Europa League: Juve have never won the Europa League in its current format but did lift the UEFA Cup three times; in 1976-77, 1989-90 and 1992-93.
Juventus’s most famous players
All Juventus fans will have their own personal choices as to who are the best players in the history of the club, and there are certainly plenty of star performers to choose from. Honourable mentions go to Pavel Nedved, Omar Simori and Roberto Baggio, but for us the following five top the list:
- Gianluigi Buffon: Dino Zoff certainly isn’t too far behind him, but it is Gianluigi Buffon who leads the way as the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the club. An imposing last line of the famed Juventus defence, Buffon played over 600 games for the club, winning 10 Serie A titles.
- Michel Platini: One of the most famous French footballers of all-time enjoyed what were arguably the finest years of his career in the famous black and white stripes. A three-time winner of the Ballon d’Or during his time at the club, Platini helped Juve to the European Cup title in 1984-85.
- Alessandro Del Piero: Juventus’s all-time appearance leader and top goal scorer. A huge influence anywhere along the front line, Del Piero was particularly effective as a supporting striker. A prolific maker and taker of chances, the Italian international was also renowned for his accuracy from set piece situations.
- Giorgio Chellini: The dominance of Juventus in recent times has largely been built upon one of the best defences in world football, and one of the biggest reasons for that has been the towering presence of Chiellini at the heart of the back four. A superb organiser and reader of the game, he has so far lifted nine Serie A titles.
- Zinedine Zidane: Another of the all-time greatest French players, the mesmerising Zidane shot to prominence with Juventus in the mid to late 1990’s. Sublime on the ball, and adept at creating and finishing chances, Zidane invariably looked a class apart, no matter who else was on the pitch.
Juventus most famous coaches
Italian football has long been renowned for its exceptional tactics, and has been the home of many of the most innovative and talented coaches in the global game. Juventus have certainly attracted their fair share of such managers, with the following three topping the bill:
- Giovanni Trapattoni: Known to many as the king of the defensive Catenaccio style of play, Trapattoni enjoyed huge success in his initial ten year spell in Turin – leading Juventus to six Serie A titles and the first UEFA Cup and European Cup wins in the history of the club. Returning for a second stint in the early 1990’s, he again took Juve to the UEFA Cup title.
- Marcelo Lippi: Juventus were without a title in nine years when Lippi took over ahead of the 1994-95 season, but that would soon change. Winning the Serie A title in his first season at the helm, Lippi added four more Italian championships and eight further trophies – including a Champion’s League title – during two spells at the club.
- Massimiliano Allegri: The pragmatic Allegri may not have been able to replicate the European success of either Trapattoni or Lippi, but his domestic record wasn’t far off being sensational. In charge between 2014 and 2019, Allegri led the side to 11 trophies, including a record four consecutive league and cup doubles.
Who are Juventus's major rivals
Whatever the footballing nation, all sides want to beat the most successful side in the land; a fact which has led to Juventus developing more than their fair share of intense rivalries over the years.
- Torino: Juventus may be the most successful, but they certainly aren’t the only big club in the city of Turin. Major city rivals Torino were initially formed by a group of protesting members of the Juventus club back in 1906, and there has been little love lost ever since. Games between the sides are known as the Derby della Mole as a reference to the famous Mole Antonelliana landmark in the city.
- Inter Milan: Fixtures between two of the biggest and best supported sides in the country are known simply as the Derby d’Italia. For a long time these were the only two sides to never be relegated from Serie A, and regularly challenged for the title. That competition led to a fierce rivalry, which was increased further due to the 2006 Calciopoli scandal which saw Juventus relegated and stripped of the title, which was then awarded to Inter Milan
- AC Milan: This rivalry is almost solely based on success, with A.C. Milan and Juventus being the two most decorated sides in the Italian game. A.C. aren’t able to match Juventus’s domestic record, but they are always quick to point out that it is they, and not Juventus, who are the country’s most successful side in European competition.
- Fiorentina: This rivalry has its roots in the Serie A season of 1981-82, in which Fiorentina fans believe Juventus were the beneficiaries of some very favourable refereeing decisions – a theory which wasn’t helped with the later Calciopoli scandal. Further flames were later added to this fire when star player Roberto Baggio left Fiorentina for Juventus in 1990.
- Roma: There is once again a familiar theme to the origins of this rivalry between Juventus and the side from the capital, with Roma alleging that the referee helped Juventus win the title back in 1980. Further controversy came in the 1990’s when Roma’s coach accused Juventus players of taking drugs. There seems to have been no substance to those claims in the end, but such incidents tend to live long in the memories of fans and players alike.
