Arsenal best performance in the top English and European Competitions
Arsenal is one of the most successful clubs in the history of the English game, and actually finished the 20th century with the highest average league position of any side. Here we take a look inside the trophy cabinet at the Emirates:
- Premier League: Arsenal have been crowned champions of England on thirteen occasions, including three times in the Premier League era – going unbeaten for the entire league season in 2003/04.
- FA Cup: The Gunners are the most successful side in FA Cup history having lifted the trophy on 14 occasions – that’s two more than big rivals Manchester United.
- Champions League: Arsenal have never won Europe’s premier club competition – coming closest in 2005/06 when losing 2-1 to Barcelona in the final.
- Europa League: It has been a similar story for Arsenal in Europe’s second cup tournament, with no wins, but runners up finishes in 1999/2000 and 2018/19. They did however win the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1993/94.
Arsenal’s most famous players
There is no shortage of stars to choose from when selecting Arsenal’s most famous players. Honorable mentions go to the likes of Ian Wright, Robert Pires, and Cliff Bastin, but below our all-time top five:
- Thierry Henry: There won’t be too much debate about the inclusion of this magnificent French forward, who easily ranks amongst the greatest players to ever grace the Premier League. Famously converted from being a winger by Arsene Wenger, Henry went on to win two league titles with the Gunners on his way to becoming the club’s all-time top scorer.
- Dennis Bergkamp: Dutchman Dennis Bergkamp seemed to be at a critical point in his career when joining Arsenal in 1995; spectacular at Ajax, things then hadn’t gone as well as planned at Inter Milan. It seems that Italian experience was merely a blip, as over 11 years at the club Bergkamp was simply brilliant. In possession of a mesmerising first touch, he won nine trophies with the club and now has a statue outside the stadium.
- Liam Brady: Irishman Brady was the standout performer in the Arsenal side of the 1970’s and just about the complete midfielder. Graceful on the ball and equipped with an excellent left foot, Brady could both create and take chances and won the FA Cup with the club in 1979, before moving on to prove his class in Serie A.
- Tony Adams: For a time in the 1990’s one of the most famous Arsenal chants was “1-0 to the Arsenal” due to the number of times the Gunners defence kept the opposition from scoring. One of the key elements of this famed defence was captain fantastic, Tony Adams. A rugged no-nonsense centre back, Adams was a defensive lynchpin for both club and country and became a cult hero during his 669 appearances for the club.
- Patrick Vieira: A member of the Arsenal “Invincibles” of 2003/04, Vieira is one of the most talented box to box midfielders the Premier League has ever seen. A huge contributor to both the defensive and offensive sides of the game, and a tenacious competitor, this World Cup winner was able to dominate matches and lifted nine trophies during his time in North London.
Arsenal most famous coaches
Arsenal have been blessed with a number of outstanding managers over the course of their history, with the following three proving to be the most influential of all:
- Herbert Chapman: One of the great early innovators of the game, Chapman is credited with introducing the “W-M” formation which is cited as being the basis for many modern-day formations. He is also the man who first really turned Arsenal into a force, leading the club to their first ever trophies before sadly passing away in 1934. The seeds he had sown did however lead to Arsenal’s period of dominance in the 1930’s during which time they won a total of five league titles.
- Arsène Wenger: The longest serving and most successful manager in the history of the club, Frenchman Wenger spent a magnificent 22 years at Arsenal. An advocate of “Total Football” Wenger’s teams played some truly beautiful football at times. The genius behind the unbeaten season in 2003/04, Wenger won 17 trophies in total, including three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.
- George Graham: Almost the polar opposite to Arsene Wenger in terms of style of football, George Graham created a defensive powerhouse at Arsenal which seemed almost impenetrable at times. From this solid foundation the Scotsman built a side which would lift eight trophies in all, including two league titles and the European Cup Winners Cup.
Who are Arsenal’s major rivals
Having only been relegated once in their history, Arsenal are now the side with the longest unbroken run in England’s top-flight. This longevity has predictably led to a number of rivalries building up over the years, both for competitive and geographical reasons:
- Tottenham Hotspur: Arsenal moved to be near neighbours of Tottenham Hotspur in 1913, and the two clubs have hated each other pretty much ever since. Relations certainly weren’t helped when the Football League voted to promote Arsenal instead of Tottenham to the top flight back in 1919. With the two sides having competed for honours and the European places over the years, there is also a competitive edge to this fixture which is known as the North London derby.
- Manchester United: For a time during the 1990’s and 2000’s this rivalry was every bit as intense as that with Tottenham Hotspur, and perhaps even more so. This was predominantly a competitive rivalry, fuelled by the fact that the two sides were regularly competing fir the Premier League title. At times the players of the two sides seemed to hate each other every bit as much as the fans – resulting in some of the most fiery fixtures in Premier League history.
- Chelsea: Another rivalry based on both the proximity of the two clubs, and the fact that both the Gunners and the Blues of Chelsea are regularly competing towards the top of the Premier League. Not as tense as wither the Spurs or Manchester United rivalries, Chelsea are nevertheless frequently voted as the third most disliked side amongst Arsenal fans.
- Man City: Manchester City fans may not particularly view this as an important rivalry, and it is one which has only really emerged since City have come into money in the 21st century. Arsenal haven’t been able to threaten in the league over this period, but there is an element of ill-feeling due to the fact that City are viewed as having bought their success – not helped by the fact that the Manchester club have poached a number of Arsenal’s better players.
- Fulham: Like Chelsea, Fulham are also based in West London, and also like Chelsea, there isn’t too much love lost between fans of the Cottagers and those of the Gunners. Arsenal have been the vastly more successful of the two clubs over the years, making this a predominantly local rivalry. The competitiveness may well be about to go up a gear though, following Fulham’s recent promotion to the Premier League.
