Liverpool History and Legends
- Foundation: As stated on the clubs crest, Liverpool were founded on Merseyside back in 1892.
- Name: The side who initially played at Anfield were non-other than Liverpool’s major rival’s Everton. When Everton left the ground due to a dispute with Anfield’s owner in 1892, a new club were formed to play at the Stadium. Briefly named Everton Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited, the name was almost immediately changed to Liverpool FC.
- Legends: The current Liverpool squad may well go down in legend, but famous names from the past include managers Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly, and playing talents such as Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, Graeme Souness, Steven Gerard and more.
- Home Stadium: Liverpool are based at the world famous Anfield. Home of the imposing Kop End, this 54,074 capacity stadium has been Liverpool’s home ever since they were formed back in 1892.
- Home Strip: Nicknamed “The Reds” Liverpool’s home strip certainly fits the bill, being made up of a red shirt, red shorts and red socks.

LFC best performance in the top English and European Competitions
One of the biggest and most well supported sides in the English game, Liverpool have tasted considerable success, both domestically and in the major European competitions:
- Premier League: Liverpool have been champions of England on an impressive 19 occasions, putting them just one behind all-time leaders Manchester United.
- FA Cup: Liverpool’s success has extened to England’s top cup competition which they have won seven times, making them the joint fifth most successful side in the history of the competition.
- Champions League: Liverpool are England’s most successful side in European competitions, lifting the European Cup in 1976-77, 1977-78, 1980-81 and 1983-84, and winning the Champion’s League in 2004-05 and 2018-19.
- Europa League: The Merseyside club also have an excellent record in Europe’s second cup competition, having lifted the trophy in 1972-73, 1975-76 and 2001-01.
Liverpool’s most famous players
The history of the Anfield club is littered with star performers, who have written their names into Liverpool folklore thanks to their exploits on the pitch, including the following five who will likely never be forgotten by fans of the club:
- Mo Salah: Such is the quality in the current Liverpool front three, that either Sadio Mané or Roberto Firmino could easily have made this list. For us though it is the close control, pace and excellent finishing of the Kop’s “Egyptian King” which has had the biggest impact on the side in recent times.
- Greame Souness: The ultimate midfield enforcer, the fierce Scotsman Souness took no prisoners in the centre of the park, but was also excellent on the ball, a superb passer and chipped in with his share of goals. A real leader on the pitch, Souness lifted an impressive 14 trophies during his time at the club.
- Ian Rush: Liverpool have had some deadly strikers over the years, but none quite so lethal as the Welsh forward Ian Rush. A prolific and instinctive finisher, Rush banged in 346 goals during two spells at Anfield, making him the all-time leading scorer in the history of the club.
- Stephen Gerrard: Third in the list of all-time appearances for the club, Gerrard was Liverpool’s captain fantastic during the 2000’s, leading the club to nine domestic and European titles, including the Champion’s League in 2004-05. A high energy midfielder, Gerrard was a superb passer and scored many spectacular long range goals.
- Kenny Dalglish: Scotsman Kenny Dalglish will always have a special place in the hearts of Liverpool fans, thanks to successful spells at the club as both a player and manager. On the pitch, Dalglish was a talented and creative forward, adept at both the making and taking of chances. His talent and goals helped Liverpool to 20 domestic and European titles during the 1970’s and 80’s.
- John Barnes: A prodigiously talented left footer, the powerfully built Barnes was one of the real superstars of the excellent Liverpool side of the late 1980’s. A nightmare for defenders due to his brilliant close control and dribbling ability, Barnes was a key creative player, and a devasting finisher when cutting inside. Capped 79 times by England, he was a two-time league winner with the Reds.
- Bruce Grobelaar: Both famous and infamous, Grobelaar will be remembered by many for his involvement in an alleged match-fixing scandal and the ensuing trials. What should not be forgotten though is just what a good goalkeeper he was. A Zimbabwe international, Grobelaar racked up over 600 appearances for Liverpool, with his cat-like agility, supreme confidence and dominance of the box helping the side to 19 trophies during his time at the club – including six league titles and the European Cup in 1983/84.
Liverpool most famous coaches
Liverpool have had a number of great sides over the years, and behind every great side lies a great manager. Current boss Jurgen Klopp already looks a strong challenger to make the list in the future, but for us the three biggest names in the history of the club are:
- Kenny Dalglish: We have already touched upon the achievements of “King Kenny” as a player, but he also enjoyed a hugely successful time of things during his time managing the club. At the helm between 1985 and 1991, and then again briefly during the 2011-12 season, Dalglish led the club to eleven trophies, including three league titles.
- Bob Paisley: Having made 253 appearances for Liverpool as a player between 1939 and 1954, Paisley became assistant manager in 1959, learning his trade under Bill Shankly. Taking over as boss upon Shankly’s retirement in 1974, the County Durham native enjoyed huge success – with his twenty trophy haul including six league titles, and three European Cups.
- Bill Shankly: Shankly may not have won quite so many honours as his successor Bob Paisley, but there are few, if any, more influential figures in the history of “The Red’s”. Taking over when Liverpool were playing their football in the second tier of the English game, Shankly built Liverpool into a major English and European side, transforming the club, and laying the foundations for the immense success which followed.
- Jürgen Klopp: And of course, the current Liverpool boss has already staked a strong claim for a place on this list. A dual Bundesliga winner when in charge of Borussia Dortmund, Klopp made the switch to Anfield in 2015, and it hasn’t taken him too long to work his magic. Narrowly missing out when losing in the 2018 Champion’s League Final, his Liverpool side returned to claim Europe’s biggest prize only twelve months later. The German native also famously delighted the Anfield faithful when leading the side to their first Premier League triumph in 30 years in 2019/20.
Who are Liverpool’s major rivals
In common with the majority of the top clubs in the English game, Liverpool have developed many rivalries over the years, for both geographical and competitive reasons, but who are their five biggest?
- Manchester United: Not only are Liverpool and Manchester United traditionally the two biggest clubs in the North West of England, they are also the two most successful clubs in the history of the English game. That local and competitive rivalry leads to this being one of the most fiercely contested fixtures of the season.
- Everton: The rivalry between these two sides started very early, with Everton leaving Anfield and Liverpool being created to fill their place. The fact that it is Liverpool who have since become the vastly more successful of the two sides has only added to the intensity of this rivalry.
- Manchester City: In truth there had been little ill-feeling between these two sides in the past, largely due to their respective hatred of Manchester United. However, that has all changed in recent years following the huge investment in Manchester City. Regularly battling for top honours, there tends to be a lot on the line when these two lock horns.
- Arsenal: This rivalry with the Gunners really began back in 1989 when an Arsenal goal with just about the last kick of the season wrested the title from Liverpool’s grasp. With both clubs having been consistently involved in a battle for the top four in the Premier League era, it is a rivalry which has never really went away.
- Chelsea: There are many events which have led to the animosity between these two sides, not least Fernando Torres abandoning Liverpool for Chelsea. Liverpool had their revenge of sorts though in twice defeating Chelsea in the Champion’s League semi-finals. Big transfers and big losses are both events which tend to linger long in the memories of fans.
