Chelsea History and Legends
- Foundation: Chelsea was founded by English businessman Gus Mears. Having purchased the Stamford Bridge ground in 1904, Mears needed a side to play in it, and so the club was duly formed one year later.
- Name: Although the ground is based in Fulham, there was already a club of that name in existence, and so the new side were named after the neighbouring borough of Chelsea.
- Legends: Many great names have been associated with the club, both on the pitch and in the dugout, including Frank Lampard, John Terry, Gianfranco Zola and José Mourinho.
- Home Stadium: Chelsea play their home games at the 40,834 capacity Stamford Bridge, located in the Fulham district of West London.
- Home Strip: Widely known as “The Blues” Chelsea’s home strip of course consists of a blue shirt, blue shorts and white socks.

Chelsea FC best performance in the top English and European Competitions
Having won thirty trophies in total, Chelsea are one of England’s most successful clubs. Here we run through how they have performed in the major domestic and European competitions:
- Premier League: Chelsea have been crowned champions of England on six occasions, with five of those successes having come since 2004.
- FA Cup: The Blues have also enjoyed significant success in England’s top cup competition, with their total of eight wins placing them joint third in the all-time list.
- Champions League: The biggest prize in the European game has made it’s way to Stamford Bridge only once, courtesy of a penalty shootout victory over Bayern Munich in the 2011/12 final.
- Europa League: Chelsea also have two wins in the Europa League, with both wins coming fairly recently, in 2012/13 and 2018/19.
Chelsea’s most famous players
One of the hallmarks of Chelsea’s recent golden era was the number of world class players who lined up in the blue shirt, making the selection of an all-time top five no easy task.
- Frank Lampard: One of the most important cogs in the Chelsea machine in the 21st century was this talented box to box midfielder. In 13 years at the club, Lampard became Chelsea’s all-time top scorer – quite an achievement considering he wasn’t even a striker – and helped the club to thirteen trophies, including a Champion’s League, and three Premier League titles.
- John Terry: Chelsea’s inspirational captain during the 2000’s was this talented and committed central defender. A real leader on the pitch, Terry lifted no fewer than 17 trophies during his time at Stamford Bridge and was a rock at the back for both club and country.
- Gianfranco Zola: The diminutive Italian was already a star when arriving at Chelsea in 1996, and it didn’t take him long to etch his place into Chelsea folklore. A creative forward with magic in his boots, Zola was capable of real moments of genius, and lit up the Premier League with many memorable goals and assists during his time in West London.
- Ron Harris: The man affectionately nicknamed “Chopper” due to his unforgiving, take no prisoners style, Ron Harris was the ultimate midfield enforcer of his era. Chopper lined up for Chelsea on a total of 795 occasions during the 1960’s and 70’s and helped the club to their first success in Europe in the 1907/71 Cup Winners Cup.
- Peter Osgood: Speaking of that debut European success, the man to score in both games against Real Madrid in the final was a certain Peter Osgood. A man for the big occasion, Osgood also scored in every round of the clubs successful 1969/70 FA Cup run, including a diving header against arch-rivals Leeds United in the final.
Chelsea most famous coaches
Chelsea have attracted a number of world-renowned coaches over the years, and especially so during the Roman Abramovich era. The likes of Gus Hiddink and Champion’s League winning Roberto Di Matteo miss out due to their brief spells in charge, but below is our list of top three Blues bosses.
- José Mourinho: The self-proclaimed “Special One” already had an impressive record when taking charge at Chelsea, having guided Porto to Champion’s League success, and he soon infected the Blues with his winning ways. A winner of six trophies, including two Premier League titles, during his first spell at the club, he returned for a second stint between 2013 and 2015 and once again led Chelsea to the Premier League summit.
- Carlo Ancelotti: One of only three managers to have won the Champion’s League trophy on three occasions, Ancelotti arrived at Chelsea with a big reputation in 2009, and largely delivered during his two year stay at the club – leading the side to the first Premier League and FA Cup double in their history in 2009/10.
- Ted Drake: The name of Ted Drake should possibly be a little more well-known than it is. He was after all the first man to win the English League title as both a player and a manager, and can be credited with completely transforming Chelsea Football Club in the 1950’s. An innovative coach, his methods led the Blue’s to their only League title of the 20th century.
Who are Chelsea's major rivals
As one of the most successful clubs in the English game, and regularly being involved in European competition, Chelsea have developed a number of heated rivalries over the years – both at home and abroad.
- Arsenal: They may not be the nearest London club to Chelsea, but chances are, if you were to ask Chelsea fans to name the side that they dislike the most, then a fair number would plump for the Gunners of Arsenal. Both competitive and local in nature, this rivalry goes back to the 1930’s and has witnessed many memorable fixtures over the years.
- Tottenham Hotspur: Another local rivalry comes in the form of Arsenal’s most hated side – Tottenham Hotspur. There has been animosity between these two sets of fans for well over forty years now, with Chelsea quick to gloat about the fact that they invariably came out on top against their London rivals. Things have been far more even in recent years, but the rivalry still remains.
- Leeds United: This was a rivalry which really took off in the 1960’s and represented a big culture clash between the working-class northerners Leeds United and the allegedly more upper-class Chelsea. Two tough tackling sides led to many hard-fought encounters, with the fighting unfortunately often spilling over into the stands. This rivalry has vanished in recent years, but may rear its head once again now that Leeds United have been promoted back into the Premier League.
- Fulham: In terms of local rivalries, things don’t get much more local than Chelsea’s clashes with fellow west Londoners Fulham – both clubs are after all located in the borough of Fulham. The fact that Chelsea have been the far more successful of the two sides has led to diminished competition in recent times; but with Fulham having recently been promoted back into the Premier League, this is another rivalry which may soon be reignited.
- Barcelona: The latest side to be added to the Chelsea most-hated list comes in the rather unexpected form of Spanish giants, Barcelona. The reason for this stems mainly from two Champion’s League clashes between the sides, both of which resulted in Barcelona wins, and both of which featured some very dubious refereeing – the type of thing fans don’t soon forget.
