AS Roma best performance in the top English and European Competitions
Roma have a formidable record at domestic level, but it has been a case of so near, and yet so far, in the major European competitions to date:
- Serie A: Roma have three Serie titles to their name, the most recent of which came in 2000/01.
- Coppa Italia: With a total of nine previous Coppa Italia wins, Roma are the second most successful side in the history of the competition.
- Champions League: The side from the capital city have never won Europe’s top club competition, but came agonisingly close in 1983/84 – only losing out to Liverpool in the final following a penalty shootout.
- Europa League: It has been a similar story in Europe’s second cup tournament. Roma making the final in 1990/91 but losing 2-1 on aggregate to Italian rivals Inter Milan.
AS Roma’s most famous players
There are many players who have won the affections of Roma fans over the years, a number of whom have shown the type of dedication to the cause which is becoming so rare in the modern game. Below are our top five Giallorossi players of all time:
- Francesco Totti: Where else to start other than with Mr Roma himself, the creative, goalscoring idol, Francesco Totti. A World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, Totti remained at Roma throughout the entirety of his 25-year senior career. He had only five trophies to show for that period – with the highlight being the Serie A title in 2000/01 – but such was his dedication to the cause that he became both the leading appearance maker and top scorer in the history of the club..
- Giuseppe Gianini: Totti’s predecessor in the famous number 10 shirt was another Italian international, Giuseppe Giannini. More of a pure playmaker than Totti, Giannini’s grace and elegance on the ball earned him the nickname of “Il Principe” (The Prince). Revered by the fans during his 15 seasons at the club, this member of the Roma hall of fame picked up four trophies at Roma, including the Serie A title in 1982/83.
- Daniele De Rossi: Another truly committed player, Rome native De Rossi spent 18 years playing for his hometown club. A tenacious ball-winner in the centre of the park, De Rossi had excellent technical ability which, allayed to his goal threat, made him just about the complete midfielder. Another member of the 2006 World Cup winning side, De Rossi never managed to win the league with Roma, but did pick up two Coppa Italia’s and one Supercoppa Italiana.
- Bruno Conti: OYet another World Cup winner is next on the list, in the shape of the outstanding left-footed right-winger, Bruno Conti. One of the greatest players in his position in the world during the 1980’s, Conti’s technique, skill and crossing ability made him a nightmare for opposing defenders. A part of the 1982/83 Serie A winning side, he also picked up five Coppa Italia winners medals during his 18 years at the club.
- Paulo Falcão: Brazilian Falcão didn’t play as many games for Roma as others on this list, but he made quite an impression during the five seasons he did spend at the club. Possessing excellent technical ability and exceptional vision, Falcão was most at home in the playmaking role, but was also a significant goal threat himself. Capped 34 times for his country, he was a key figure in Roma’s Serie A triumph in 1982/83.
AS Roma most famous coaches
In common with most of the top sides in the Italian game, Roma have built up a number of significant rivalries over the years, for both local and competitive reasons. There always seems to be a little extra on the line whenever the side from the capital take on any of the following five sides:
- Nils Liedholm: Good enough as a player to be voted the best Swedish footballer of the 20th Century, Liedholm also forged a considerable reputation as a manager. One of the earliest advocates of the zonal marking system, Liedholm had four spells in charge at Roma overall – leading the club to the Serie A title in 1982/83, in addition to three Coppa Italia triumphs.
- Fabio Capello: Having played over 60 times for Roma during his time on the pitch, the tactically astute Capello returned for a five-year spell in the dugout between 1999 and 2004. Already a league winner at both AC Milan and Real Madrid at the time of his appointment, Capello proved to have the magic touch at Roma too, leading the Giallorossi to Serie A glory in 2000/01.
- Luciano Spalletti: A late starter as a player, Spalletti didn’t progress beyond the lower reaches of the Italian league system on the pitch, but achieved considerably more success as a coach. Having led Empoli from Serie C to the top flight, Spalletti then forged an entertaining Roma outfit, picking up two wins in the Coppa Italia and one in the Supercoppa Italiana, in addition to finishing as runner up in Serie A on no fewer than four occasions.
Who are AS Roma’s major rivals
As one of the oldest and most successful sides in British football, United have developed a number of fierce rivalries with competing sides over the years. But who are the biggest of all?
- Lazio: Roma’s biggest rivalry – and by some distance too – comes whenever they take on the side who share, not only the city of Rome, but also the Stadio Olympico – arch enemies, Lazio. Known as the Derby della Capitale, this is renowned as being the most heated inter-city rivalry in the Italian game. The fact that both clubs have regularly featured towards the top of the Serie A table has only served to fan the flames of this passionate encounter.
- Napoli: Known as the Derby del Sole (Derby of the Sun), this matchup sees the clash of the two biggest sides who aren’t based in the north of the country. Both, central Roma, and southern Napoli boast fanatical fanbases, and both have enjoyed similar levels of success over the years. Not as fiery as the clash with Lazio, this is more accurately defined as a friendly yet competitive rivalry.
- Juventus: Not many sides in Serie A have much love for Juventus, and Roma are certainly no different in that regard. The fact that there have been numerous occasions – including in fairly recent times – when these two clubs who have fought it out for the title, has given Roma more reason than most to dislike the side from Turin – especially as Juve almost always came out on top.
- AC Milan: Roma’s dislike of the northern sides isn’t restricted to Juventus, they also have little love for A.C. Milan. There isn’t so much history here as in the Juventus fixture, but each of these clubs are more often than not at least competing for the coveted European positions, which regularly adds a competitive edge to the fixture.
- Inter Milan: Rounding off the list are the other side from Milan, Inter. As the official and economic capitals of the country respectively, both Roma and Milan are very proud cities, with equally proud and dedicated supporters. Whether in the Stadio Olympico or the San Siro, a passionate encounter is all but guaranteed when these sides clash.
