Inter Milan best performance in the top English and European Competitions
One of the biggest and best supported sides in the Italian game, Inter have achieved considerable success at both domestic and European level:
- Serie A: Winning their first Serie A title in 1909/10 and their most recent in 2009/10, Inter’s total of 18 titles places them joint second in the all-time list.
- Coppa Italia: The Milan club have also proven effective in knockout cup action, with seven Coppa Italia trophies in the cabinet.
- Champions League: “I Nerazzurri” have been crowned kings of Europe on three occasions – conquering the continent in 1963/64, 1964/65 and 2009/10.
- Europa League: Inter have matched their European Cup/Champions League tally in Europe’s second club competition – lifting the UEFA Cup in 1990/91, 1993/94 and 1997/98.
Inter Milan’s most famous players
There have been many great contributors to the Inter Milan success story, with a whole host of globally renowned stars having sported the famous black and blue stripes over the years. All fans will have their own view but, in our opinion, the following five talents come out on top of the pile:
- Luis Suarez: Unlike the prolific Barcelona frontman of the same name, the original Luis Suarez plied his trade in the middle of the park, and he did so to gracefully devastating effect. A natural with the ball at his feet, Suarez was one of those players who always seemed to have time on the ball, no matter how many defenders surrounded him. The first Spanish born player to win the Ballon d’Or, he won three Serie A titles and two European Cups during his time in Milan.
- Ronaldo: Blessed with brilliance, but cursed with injury issues, Ronaldo didn’t play as many games for Inter as others on this list, but was simply too talented not to be included. Electrifyingly quick, skilful, direct, and an excellent finisher, the Brazilian was close to unplayable at his peak. He did win just the one trophy whilst at Inter – in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup – but was also twice crowned the FIFA World Player of the Year during his time at the club.
- Giueseppe Meazza: Two time World Cup winner Meazza was the original super striker to line up for Inter, and despite having played way back in the 1920’s and 30’s, he remains the all-time top scorer in the history of the club. In addition to his success with the national side, he also lifted three Serie A titles whilst at Inter. A player so good, they named the stadium in his honour!
- Javier Zanetti: Argentine international Zanetti spent 19 years in total at Inter, 13 of which were as the captain of the club. A highly effective and consistent full-back or defensive midfielder, the classy Zanetti was incredibly dependable and a key factor in the club winning 16 trophies during his time in Milan. Having donned the famous shirt on a total of 858 occasions, he is also the clubs all-time leading appearance maker.
- Giacinto Facchetti: Inter have fielded a number of outstanding defenders in the past, but perhaps none better than this rock of the 1960’s and 70’s. The base for all that was good about Inter during his eighteen years at the club, Facchetti was influential in the four Serie A titles and two European Cups won by I Nerazzurri over this period. Also a European Championship winner with the Italian National side, he remains one of the most revered names in Inter history.
Inter Milan most famous coaches
As good as the players on the pitch have been, Inter wouldn’t have achieved the success they have without a number of outstanding managers; the following three men in particular contributing greatly to the history of the club:
- Helenio Herrera: The manager credited with changing the face of the Italian game, and the inventor of the famed “Catenaccio” style of play. Joining Inter in 1960, within two years he had lead the club to the first of three Serie A titles during his time in charge. Perhaps his crowning glory came in Europe though as his famed tactical approach to the game resulted in back to back European Cup successes in 1963/64 and 1964/65.
- Roberto Mancini: Inter Milan were undoubtedly performing below expectations when Mancini took charge in 2004, but within three seasons the former Italian international had transformed the club into the dominant force in the Italian game. A Serie A title in 2005/06 was the clubs first since 1988/89 and Mancini swiftly followed it up with two more in 2006/07 and 2007/08 – cementing his status as one of the club’s all-time greats.
- Jose Mourinho: The “Special One’s” time in Italy cannot be viewed as anything other than a resounding success. Joining Inter in 2008, he won the Serie A title in each of his two seasons at the club, before achieving the ultimate goal of lifting the Champion’s League itself in 2009/10 – the first time Inter had been crowned kings of Europe since 1964/65.
Who are Inter Milan’s major rivals
One of the most well-known Italian clubs, Inter have many fans all around the world. As with most popular sides though, there are just as many fans who love to hate the Nerazzuri, including those from the following five clubs:
- AC Milan: The “Derby della Madonnina” – named after the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the city – is one of Italy’s most famous derby fixtures. Inter emerged from a dispute at AC back in 1908, and much of that bad feeling lingers to this day. The fact the two clubs have enjoyed similar levels of success only serves to fuel the fire.
- Juventus: No real surprise here, as just about every side in Italy seems to hate Juventus. That of course is partly down to the success of “The Old Lady”, but certainly hasn’t been helped by events such as the Calciopoli scandal, which saw Juventus stripped of the Serie A title, which was then handed to Inter.
- Roma: Inter Milan lifted the Serie A title on five occasions between 2005 and 2010, and oin four of those seasons it was Roma who finished as runners up. A total of nine meetings in cup finals since 2006 has contributed further to what has become a hugely competitive rivalry between these two clubs from two of Italy’s biggest cities.
- Atalanta: Another rivalry exists with the Bergamo based club of Atalanta. Bergamo lies just to the east of Milan, and as such there is a significant local element to the competition between the clubs. Inter have traditionally been the vastly more successful of the two sides, but Atalanta have enjoyed something of a resurgence of late, lending a more competitive element to this battle of the black and blues.
- Napoli: One of Inter’s biggest North vs South clashes comes when they do battle with Naples based, Napoli. Napoli do lie a long way behind Inter in terms of trophies won, but are still in the top ten most successful Italian clubs of all time, and in recent seasons have invariably been challenging for the top four positions in the league.
